Unit Description

This unit sets out to train students in the skills needed to be a scientist. Measurement, observation and inference, and experimenting are the main topics and skills covered.

Lessons

Observing the Natural World Resources: 11 YWBAT: 1.) State the characteristics of a scientific observation. 2.) Make observations of the natural world 7,720 Making Inferences Resources: 2 YWBAT: Make inferences on observations of the natural world. 8,755 Using your keen observation skills to infer Resources: 3 YWBAT: Analyze images and make observations that lead to the development of logical, reasonable inference. 1,127 Egg Demonstration Resources: 1 YWBAT: Record observations and make inferences about the egg demonstration 1,718 Metric Conversions Resources: 5 YWBAT: 1)Correctly convert metric units 55,503 Measuring Length Resources: 7 YWBAT: 1) Identify the basic unit for measuring length 2) Use a metric ruler to measure various lengths to the nearest centimeter and millimeter. 12,534 Measuring lab (Sciencespot.net) Resources: 1 YWBAT:apply your understanding of metric conversions and proper measuring skills to accurately determine the length of various objects. 1,519 Measuring Volume of Rectangular Solids Resources: 1 YWBAT: 1) Measure the length, width and height of a rectangular object to calculate its volume. 2.) Define volume 3,486 Measuring Liquid Volume Resources: 3 YWBAT: 1.) Identify the scale on a graduated cylinder in order to measure the volume of a liquid. 12,624 Measuring Volume of Irregular Objects Resources: 2 YWBAT: 1) Use the water displacement method to measure the volume of irregularly shaped objects. 17,325 Measuring Mass with a Triple Beam Balance Resources: 3 YWBAT: 1) Accurately define matter and mass 2) Accurately read the mass of an object to the nearest hundredth place. 18,336 Using the IVCDV chart to help understand variables and constants Resources: 2 YWBAT: 1) Organize a scientific experiment 2) Accurately identify and explain the independent and dependent variables and constants in different experiments 3,014 Gummy Bear Experiment Resources: 6 YWBAT: 1) Utilize your scientific measuring skills and experimental design knowledge to design an experiment that tests the effect of water on gummy bear size. 62,380 The Egg Mystery (Day 2) Resources: 1 SWBAT: Research various websites and view simulations to gather evidence for our questions 272
